The humble bicycle is a practical and stylish way to get about. There are those who might question this cyclist using the pavement, even though she is travelling at a low speed and is no threat to anyone else, but is that the right question? Surely a better question would be why isn’t the City of Edinburgh Council (which has a stated target to have 15% of all journeys in made by bike by 2020) actively taking steps to make the roads safe enough that she feels able to use them? Until people feel that the roads are safe, they will continue to ride on the pavements or not ride at all. Telling them that they must become “confident” cyclist and ride with the motor traffic is simple not good enough!
